Ahmedabad at bottom of 8 cities in job creation: Study
While cloud computing is widely recognised as the next big opportunity to watch out for, it has already made significant inroads in the industry. However, the IT workforce may not keep pace with the developments.
Ahmedabad: The city gave a poor show in creating jobs in the annual quarter from January to March in 2016. A study conducted by apex industry body Assocham found that in the given period only 20,541 jobs were created in the city, which was just 2.4% of total jobs created in eight major metros of India, in the same period. The city ranked lowest in job creation in the last quarter of FY-16, among eight cities including Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region), Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata. However, given that an earlier study released about a month ago had found 42,530 new jobs had been created in the entire state of Gujarat in the last quarter of FY-16, findings of the recent study showed Ahmedabad, alone, continues to generate close to 50% of new jobs in the state. In the recently published Assocham Placement Study of major metros of India, Delhi-NCR led job creation with 2.6 lakh new jobs, claiming over 30.1% of the total 8.52 lakh jobs created in eight cities. About 89% of jobs were created in just five cities with Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad trailing after Delhi, said the study.Bangalore contributed 23.4% of total jobs, according to the study, followed by Mumbai with 18.6%.
Among major cities that recorded significant job openings during January to March 2016, Ahmedabad ranked the lowest. In Ahmedabad, of the new job openings created in last quarter of FY-16, about 54.5% were from IT-enabled services (ITeS) followed by services sector (17.3%), manufacturing (14.17%), banking financial services and insurance (8.3%) among others.IT, IT-enabled services and IT hardware sector, together, accounted for the major share of about 60.6% of new jobs generated across sectors among all cities studied by Assocham during January - March 2016, while services sector ranked second with 17.6% share followed by manufacturing (9.4%).In an earlier study of job creation in states during last quarter of FY-16, Gujarat, with 5% share of total jobs created in India, was ranked 7th among states, while Karnataka had emerged numero uno in this regard with a share of over 24%. That earlier study had revealed that states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh had created more jobs in the last quarter of FY16 than Gujarat. Maharashtra (23%) was ranked second, followed by Tamil Nadu (10.5%), Andhra Pradesh and Telangana region combined (9%), Haryana (8%) and Uttar Pradesh (7.5%).
